Heatwave! Ibiza is already reaching fever pitch — both on the ground and in the clubs.
Record heat has gripped the island and we’re only just hitting the halfway mark, but it’s not just the temperature that’s been peaking. Mid-season and the energy is relentless: from landmark anniversaries to fresh new chapters, the island’s rhythm feels familiar, but noticeably re-tuned. Martin Garrix (page 46) celebrating 10 years at Ushuaïa Ibiza is a benchmark moment — not just for him, but for the generation who came up on his sound. At the same time, joint cover star Josh Baker (page 64) is leading a different wave: a next-gen artist taking inspiration from ’90s house, now making a serious mark in the scene, and bringing his sound to Amnesia for a run of dates this summer. Appetite (page 58) — the young UK upstarts creating hi-jinks at Chinois — bring that same sense of raw ambition and community-first thinking. No gimmicks, just well-shaped parties.
Elsewhere, the island keeps turning. UNVRS finally opened its doors with a mammoth weekend, something for the ‘straight through crew’ — a hi-spec, future-facing spectacle that has been running at full throttle. 528 is quietly reshaping expectations too: bringing the open-air, dancing- under-the-stars dynamic back to the island, musically broad, and bookings with real dynamism. Defected’s return to Pacha (page 74) has added further weight to the idea that iconic brands can still get it right, especially when the line-ups are this tight.
There’s more depth to the bookings this year. More diversity behind the decks. More styles. Less formula. The underground feels like it’s pushing through again — slowly, confidently, with longer sets, weirder records, and DJs being given room to actually play.
Further in this issue, we check in with Melon Bomb (page 80) as they hit 10 years of mischief and mayhem. Balearic music still anchors so much of this place, and we ask a handful of artists what it really means today (p122). We speak to prog-house superstar Miss Monique about her season residency (p54) and move to the island. Whilst Sarah Story tells us her own story (p118), and Jaguar (page 82) premieres her first original music in the place that helped shape her journey. Ibiza really does have something for everyone.
¡Ola de calor! Ibiza está alcanzando temperaturas febriles – tanto en la isla como en los clubs.
El calor ha dominado la isla y tan sólo hemos alcanzado la mitad del verano, pero no es sólo la temperatura que está alcanzando su punto álgido. Estamos a media temporada y la energía es implacable: desde aniversarios trascendentales a nuevos y frescos capítulos, el ritmo de la isla es familiar, aunque ha sido notablemente ajustado. Martin Garrix (pág. 46) celebra 10 años en Ushuaïa, un momento destacable no sólo para él, sino para toda una generación que adepta a su sonido. Al mismo tiempo, la co-estrella de portada Josh Baker (pág. 64) está liderando una ola diferente: un artista de nueva generación que se inspira en el house de los 90s, y que ahora está causando gran furor en la escena y trae su sonido a Amnesia por varias fechas este verano. Appetite (pág. 58) – creado por jóvenes estrellas británicas llevan sus travesuras a Chinois – brinda el mismo sentido de ambición cruda e ideales comunitarios. Nada de trucos, sólo fiestas bien planificadas.
Además, la isla no para de cambiar, UNVRS finalmente abrió sus puertas con un fin de semana monumental, algo para aquellos que sobreviven más allá de la noche – con un espectáculo futurístico y especializado que ha estado funcionando a toda pastilla. 528 también está remodelando tímidamente las expectativas de la audiencia: al traer de vuelta a la isla sesiones de baile al aire libre y bajo las estrellas, amplitud musical y fichajes con verdadero dinamismo. El regreso de Defected a Pacha (p. 74) ha añadido más peso si cabe a la idea de que las marcas emblemáticas todavía pueden acertar, especialmente cuando los line-ups son tan ceñidos.
Este año los fichajes tienen más profundidad. Hay mucha más diversidad en las cabinas. Más estilos. Menos fórmulas. El underground parece que vuelve a resurgir – poco a poco, pero con confianza y con sets más largos, discos más raros y DJs recobrando espacio para pinchar de verdad.
En este mismo número, también charlamos con Melon Bomb (p. 80) que cumple 10 años de travesuras y desenfreno. La música baleárica todavía está presente en muchas partes de la isla, y preguntamos a un puñado de artistas lo que significa el baleárico hoy (p. 122). Charlamos con superestrellas del progressive como Miss Monique sobre su residencia estival (p.54) y su estancia en la isla. Mientras que Sarah Story nos cuenta su propia historia (p.188) y Jaguar (p.82) estrena su primera música original en el lugar que le dio forma a su carrera. Ibiza realmente tiene de todo y para todos.
